Design for the Arts

Mood: Determined

I consider myself more of a painter in my heart, but I do graphic design for an occupation. I'm nervous but also excited to be doing some graphic design projects for the Arts Council here; pocket folder and a poster. When working with a non-profit organization, I remember that they have very small budgets. They have a NEW LOGO, so I'm going to use elements of the logo to enhance it; play off it.

So, the thing to do is remember what I was taught in school:
  • Less is More!
  • KISS (Keep it Simple, Stupid)
  • Know your client!
My friend, Beth, also gave me a fantastic list of graphic design criteria to follow. She's a graphic designer in Minneapolis.

Sites for Inspiration:

I found this Habitat for Humanity pocket folder on Behance. Love it! The OBJECTIVE: "The "Grow" theme is a package handed to new homeowners for starting a backyard garden. Included are seed packets, some tips for growing a backyard garden, and a booklet of recipes for using their harvests."

Other reminders:

OBJECTIVE (GOAL) is: Create a pocket folder for a "...national arts education program that encourages the study of great poetry by offering free educational materials and a dynamic recitation competition to high schools across the country. This program helps students master public speaking skills, build self-confidence, and learn about literary history and contemporary life. Poetry Out Loud is a partnership of the National Endowment for the Arts, Poetry Foundation, and the state and jurisdictional arts agencies."

OVERALL LOOK/STYLE: Retro, hip, fresh

Also, if I was the most educated high schooler who was super enthused about getting this pocket folder to hold my precious poetry and notes, how would I feel receiving this? Know your client!
